The relatively humble dress of the children and the pastoral setting suggest that this is the children's mother rather than a nursemaid for a wealthy family. The tactile embrace of the mother conveys a universal emotion that transcends class and indeed time.The painting is presented in its original handsome black mount, which mimics the popular 18th-century fashion for verre églomisé frames, whereby the rear face of the framing glass would be painted black and sometimes gilded.Delicately painted in a subtle palette of grey, blue and brown wash.
