Offered is a fabulous 19th century copper jelly mold made by Benham & Froud of London c1870..
This mold is marked on one side with an impressed number "371" (partially obscured) which would have been the stock number. Above the stock number on the same side is Benham's famous orb and cross mark - also partially obscured - (this would have happened during manufacturing process). On the opposite side of the mold is a impressed artists mark - also partially obscured. This was the mark or signature of the person actually creating the mold. This round shaped mold has gothic inspired arched curves and stacked towers ending in rounded tops. The mold measures approximately 4.5 inches high and 5.25 inches in diameter.
In 1821 the original founder of Benham & Froud won a contest to restore the orb and cross on top of the dome on St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Benham & Froud later adapted these two elements as their logo for copperware. It became their famous trademark of a cross resting on top of an orb. Their handmade copper items were of such quality that they were considered the Rolls-Royce of kitchenware. These molds now serve as collectors’ items to add personality and quality to decorate a kitchen.
This mold is in excellent antique condition showing minor wear commensurate with age and use.
I see a few very minor dings which are hardly noticeable. These molds were used often and often showed lots of wear and tear. This mold looks fantastic.
The mold is made from a very heavy gauge of copper. The tinning to the interior is worn and would need to be re-tinned if it was to be used. This mold would have been used to make an aspic or gelatin side dish, or possibly a small cake. It is in excellent antique condition with very minor, if any issues that I can see.
