The inscription identifies him as the founder and first director of the French Jesuit missions to China and the East Indies. Born in 1633, Verjus devoted his life to missionary work and the administration of Jesuit efforts abroad. He died in Paris on 16 May 1706 at the age of 75. Engraved by Portier in France around 1790, the portrait shows Verjus wearing the traditional habit of the Society of Jesus—long robe with gathered pleats, high collar, and simple cincture. His expression is calm and thoughtful, with a subtle direct gaze, suggesting both his intellectual commitment and spiritual dedication. The meticulous linework of the engraving captures the texture of the fabric and the curls of his hair, while a finely ruled background emphasizes the clarity of the likeness. The plate is presented within a decorative border and accompanied by a detailed cartouche containing biographical information. Such portraits were often included in illustrated histories of the Jesuit order, missionary reports, or encyclopedic works of the Enlightenment, intended to both honor the subject and provide readers with an authoritative image of key figures in global Catholic missions. Condition report: Very good condition with a clear plate mark and only minor age-related toning. A few light spots in the margins. Strong, crisp impression with excellent preservation of fine engraved details. Framing tips: This portrait would be best displayed in a classic black or dark mahogany frame with an off-white or light cream archival mat to highlight the tonal richness of the engraving. For added refinement, a gilt slip could subtly enhance the presentation. Technique: Engraving Maker: Portier, France, c.1790 See less
