Depicted in sweeping perspective, the scene shows dozens of warships calmly sailing through the strategic straits near Constantinople (Istanbul), while troops and commanders observe from the surrounding hills. The image was drawn by A. Provost and printed by Lemercier in Paris, one of the most esteemed lithographic publishers of the period. It was issued by J. Rémusat in Paris and published in London by Thomas Boys, a noted distributor of fine prints. The print was part of a series documenting significant episodes of the Crimean War, which was fought between 1853 and 1856. In the foreground, officers of both nations are gathered on a hilltop above a military encampment. They survey the expansive view unfolding before them—a fleet of fully rigged warships gliding silently into the open sea, symbolizing power, alliance, and impending conflict. To the right, the imposing silhouette of an Ottoman fortress rises above the rugged terrain, emphasizing the region's centuries-old military significance. This lithograph not only documents a key strategic movement but also conveys the grandeur and political weight of the moment. The alliance of Britain and France with the Ottoman Empire against Russian expansion was a pivotal shift in European geopolitics, and this visual narrative reinforces the symbolism of cooperation and readiness. Condition report: The lithograph is in very good condition. The image area is strong and well preserved, with excellent detail and tonal balance. There is slight foxing in the margins and very minor age toning at the edges. The paper remains full and untrimmed. Framing suggestions: A classic dark wood or ebonized frame will pair well with the sepia tones and 19th-century character. Use a wide off-white or light grey mat to highlight the richness of the composition and provide depth. This piece will appeal to collectors of maritime history, Crimean War memorabilia, and historical military prints. See less
