The top fish, *Serranus Summana*, is rendered in deep brown hues with distinctive electric-blue spots and a bold yellow crescent marking on its side. This tropical species, found in the Red Sea and Western Indian Ocean, is known for its dramatic coloration and territorial behavior around coral reefs. The lower fish, *Serranus Lutti*, features an intricate pattern of cream-colored blotches against a dark brown body, with additional patterning on the fins and head. Both species belong to the *Serranidae* family—commonly referred to as sea bass or groupers—highly prized by both ichthyologists and marine collectors. This plate, marked “Poissons Pl. 5,” was drawn by Oudart and engraved by Thomas. It forms part of a broader zoological series from the French government's effort to document the fauna encountered during 19th-century exploratory missions. The craftsmanship of the print stands out for its rich hand-coloring, delicate shading, and biological precision. The *Voyage en Abyssinie* was one of several major French scientific voyages of the period, reflecting an era of global exploration and documentation of the natural world. These fish plates, in particular, combine decorative appeal with genuine scientific value, making them highly sought after by collectors of antique natural history prints. Condition: Good condition overall. Light scattered foxing, mainly in margins, and mild edge wear. On the left a waterstain but outside the image and platemark. Plate mark clearly visible. No restoration or trimming. Framing Tips: This print would look excellent in a natural wood or black frame with a cream or sand-colored mat to enhance the earthy tones of the fish. A UV-protective glass or acrylic sheet is advised to preserve the hand-applied coloring. An ideal addition to a coastal interior, natural history collection, or vintage gallery wall. See less
