Item description:
delightful cast ceramic sculpture, glazed and richly vitrified, depicting an elderly religious woman holding a bible and rosary in her hands. Marked under the base with two marks from michael powolny's wiener keramik, specifically the artist's very first mark, consisting of the letters "w" and "k" intersecting each other with a triangle of incised dots underneath, used from 1906 to 1912, and then the one used after 1919, consisting of a vase of flowers with the letters "k" and "g." the significance of these two marks is due to the fact that the model for this sculpture was created at the beginning of his artistic production, so we are talking about one of the first models made by the artist, between 1906 and 1912, and this one in particular is a reissue of the same sculpture made after 1919. Beautiful patina throughout the sculpture, especially visible under the base. The brown shawl is beautiful, with a dark checkered pattern and small blue dots in the corners of the squares.
useful information for evaluating the item:
according to our internet research, the eight highest auction results achieved by michael powolny's ceramics range from €30,000 to just over €50,000, to which auction fees of 25-30% must be added. This gives an idea of the value of ceramics made by this famous austrian artist, undoubtedly one of the most important figures in european ceramics in the first half of the 20th century. We all know how few ceramic sculptures from the early 1900s can achieve such results; only objects made by great artists and designers famous throughout the world can achieve such results. In addition to the highest results achieved by the artist, we also found some sculptures depicting women in ceramics of various shapes and sizes, to give a more specific idea of the value of objects similar to ours, with auction results ranging from €2,000 to over €13,500, depending on when the auction took place and the auction house that sold the object.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
michael powolny (1871-1954) was one of the most important artists of the viennese secession of 1900. In 1906, he founded his own workshop, wiener keramik, which in 1907 became part of josef hoffmann and kolomon moser's wiener werkstatte, with whom michael powolny collaborated for many years. The last photo shows the marks used by the artist, including those found under our sculpture.
