The man and woman are portrayed standing side by side indoors, in front of a wooden wall, adding a sense of intimacy and focus on the garments’ intricate details. The groom wears a blue shirt, red vest, and a blue double-breasted jacket with silver buttons, along with black wool breeches and pale blue stockings. His conical cap and belt with silver ornaments are distinctive features of male attire from the region. He holds a walking stick and a decorative handkerchief. The bride’s costume is richly embroidered with floral patterns and enhanced with multiple layers of clothing. Her red headdress with gold ornamentation, blue sleeves, and apron decorated with colorful needlework indicate the importance of the occasion. Silver jewelry, a large brooch, and multiple buttons further highlight the festive nature of her costume. This print is Plate 3 from the series Udvalgte Norske Nationaldragter, or Selected Norwegian National Costumes. It was published by Chr. Tonsberg in Christiania (now Oslo) and printed by Winckelmann and Sonner in Berlin. The design was created by Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, one of Norway’s most important 19th-century artists. The series is one of the earliest visual documentations of Norway’s regional folk attire and played a key role in the country’s national romantic identity movement. This particular plate, focused on wedding attire, is one of the most elaborate in the series and a highlight for collectors of costume history and Scandinavian decorative arts.
