Created by Georg Balthasar Probst and published in Augsburg around 1780, the series presents the familiar story through the lens of European court life, with lavish interiors, classical architecture, and richly costumed figures. Each print features engraved captions in Latin and Spanish and is numbered from 01 to 06. Designed as 'vues d’optique'—optical perspective prints—these engravings were made to be viewed through a zograscope, a lens-and-mirror device that emphasized perspective and brought scenes to life. This visual storytelling format was highly popular during the 18th century and often used for both moral education and entertainment. The sequence begins with the son requesting and dividing his inheritance, followed by his departure, his descent into poverty, and his work as a swineherd. It continues with his return home, his plea for forgiveness, and the joyous feast thrown in his honor by the father. Despite the sacred subject, Probst sets the narrative in opulent palatial surroundings, reflecting the tastes of the period and the didactic nature of religious illustration in Enlightenment Europe. Condition: Fair condition. Each print retains original hand-coloring with strong detail and vibrant tones. There is some foxing and waterstaining in the upper right margins, a few small cuts in the left blank margin, and occasional surface soiling. One print has a stain near the center, but most image areas remain clean and visually strong. All sheets show fraying and minor handling wear, but have ample margins and display well as a unified set. Framing Tip: This series would make a striking wall display when framed uniformly. Consider narrow gold or ebonized wood frames with matching mats in a neutral cream or light grey tone. For preservation, use UV-protective glass and archival backing. The prints can be arranged in two rows of three or vertically in a tall column depending on wall space.
