Created by François Claudius Compte-Calix, it was published in Paris in 1853 by Chez Aubert et C-ie as part of the acclaimed Le Keepsake de Costumes series, which presented traditional costumes from Europe and beyond in refined artistic detail. François Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880) was a notable French painter and lithographer known for his romantic and historical scenes and detailed costume studies. His works combined artistic refinement with documentary accuracy, capturing authentic clothing and the dignity of regional peoples. This hand-colored lithograph, part of the Musée Cosmopolite collection, depicts the Sardinian man leaning casually against a stone pillar, smoking a long white pipe. He wears a dark cap, a red shirt under a fur-lined sleeveless jacket, blue pleated skirt-like trousers over white breeches, and beautifully detailed tall brown leather gaiters embroidered with blue patterns. The background features greenery and architectural elements, placing him in his natural Sardinian landscape. Lithographic lines create depth and texture, while careful hand coloring enhances the rich tones of his clothing and the environment. Lithography, the technique used here, involved drawing directly onto limestone plates before inking and pressing onto paper to achieve crisp lines and tonal variation. Each print was then hand-colored using water-based pigments, adding vividness and a lifelike presence. Condition summary: good overall, with scattered foxing mainly in the margins, light age toning typical of mid-19th century prints, and a minor water stain along the right margin, not affecting the central image. Framing tips: this print will be beautifully presented in a rustic wood, walnut, or dark brown frame to harmonize with the earthy tones of the costume. A cream or warm beige mat will enhance the delicate hand coloring and provide a subtle contrast to the aged paper. Museum-quality UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve colors and prevent further toning. Ideal for collectors of Italian regional costumes, Sardinian heritage, and 19th-century lithography, this print is also a refined decorative accent for studies, libraries, country-style homes, or cultural institutions, bringing authentic European rustic charm and timeless character to any interior setting.
