Produced in France around 1790, the print was engraved by Portier (“Portier sc.” noted at lower left). The figure is shown in mid-action, astride a spirited horse, with his right arm raised high holding a sword. He wears elaborate traditional garments, including a turban adorned with a feather plume, a decorated sash, and a richly embroidered tunic, conveying both royal authority and martial prowess. The city of Madurai, located in Tamil Nadu, was historically a major center of Tamil culture and power, famed for its temples and dynastic rule. During the 18th century, the region saw shifting control between local rulers, the Marathas, the Nawabs of Arcot, and colonial powers such as the British and French. Figures like the one depicted here would have been central to the military and political life of the period. The horse is finely rendered, with a high-stepping pose suggesting readiness and vigor, while the background shows distant architecture and rolling terrain. The framed composition, with ornamental cartouche below, is typical of late 18th-century French engravings intended for illustrated histories, travel books, and costume compendia. Such images provided European readers with visual impressions of distant lands, often blending observation with a touch of romanticized exoticism. Condition report: Very good condition with light toning in margins and a visible plate mark. A few faint foxing spots, minor edge wear consistent with age. Strong, clear impression with crisp line work. Framing tips: A black or deep mahogany frame with a cream archival mat would highlight the engraving’s contrast. A thin gold fillet could add refinement and draw the eye to the richly detailed figure and horse. Technique: Engraving Maker: Portier, France, c.1790 See less
