This beautifully hand-colored 19th-century print features two vividly illustrated marine species: Le Serran Colon (Serranus Colonus) and Le Savonier aux Deux Couleurs (Rypticus Bicolor), also known as the Mottled Soapfish. It originates from the zoological section of Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate La Vénus, a scientific exploration conducted under the French Navy and published in Paris by Gide in 1846.
The upper fish, Serranus Colonus, is a type of sea bass or grouper, notable for its streamlined shape, golden hue, and vibrant red eyes. The lower fish, Rypticus Bicolor, is known in Spanish as jaboncillo arrecifal and is part of the Grouper or Epinephelidae family—collectively referred to as serranos in Mexico. Commonly called the Mottled Soapfish, this species often swims in groups near the surface but retreats quickly when startled, making close observation rare in the wild. This plate, marked Poissons Pl. 2, was drawn by Werner and engraved by Bernard, with printing attributed to Bougeard.
The quality of the engraving and subtle hand-coloring are characteristic of early French scientific expedition prints. Each species is presented in profile with great anatomical accuracy, intended for both artistic appreciation and scientific documentation. The Voyage de la Vénus (1836–1839) was a significant French naval expedition that circumnavigated the globe, collecting valuable zoological, botanical, and ethnographic data. The resulting publications were among the most beautifully illustrated works of the period and remain highly prized by collectors today.
