The couple is shown standing in the snow, with a reindeer and sled behind them. The mountainous backdrop and frosty setting highlight the harsh conditions of Sámi winter life. Both man and woman wear thick fur-lined garments made from reindeer hide, with the fur turned inward for insulation. Their high boots, woolen leg bindings, and layered clothing are practical adaptations to the extreme cold. The man is seen from behind, gesturing with his arm while speaking to the woman. He wears a blue cap with red trim, and his belt carries traditional tools. The woman’s outfit is decorated with a red hem and scarf, and she holds a small item in her mittened hands. This is Plate 15 from the series Udvalgte Norske Nationaldragter, or Selected Norwegian National Costumes, published by Chr. Tonsberg in Christiania (Oslo) and printed in Berlin by Winckelmann and Sonner. The artist behind the design was Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, a leading figure in Norwegian national romanticism. This lithographic series was one of the first to document regional and indigenous dress across Norway, with a special emphasis on the daily lives of the Sámi people. This plate is especially significant for its depiction of Arctic dress and Sámi survival in a winter landscape, making it a rare and valuable print for collectors of ethnographic and northern heritage art. Condition: Very good condition with bright colors and clean image area. Slight wear at the lower left margin and minor toning in the corners, but overall well preserved. Framing tips: Frame with a light wood or white frame to echo the snowy setting. Use a soft grey or pale blue mount to complement the wintry tones. A strong choice for Nordic or seasonal-themed displays. See less
