Vue du Nouveau Voor-Hout en venant du Bois', published circa 1770. The scene depicts the elegant Nieuwe Voorhout avenue in The Hague as seen when approaching from the Haagse Bos (The Hague Forest). The perspective shows a wide tree-lined avenue with stately classicist houses on both sides, elegant figures strolling along the street, a rider on horseback, and a covered wagon drawn by three horses. Further down the avenue, groups of finely dressed people converse and walk under the rows of lush green trees leading towards a grand building at the far end. The engraving is richly hand-colored in green, red, blue, and ochre tones typical of mid- to late-18th-century vues d’optique. Optica prints (vues d’optique) were perspective engravings designed to be viewed through a zograscope to create a three-dimensional illusion. These views were popular educational and decorative items depicting major European cities and streetscapes, sold by publishers in Augsburg, Paris, and London. Condition report: Good condition. Strong impression with vivid period hand coloring. Light general age toning, scattered small spots in the sky area, and minor marginal handling marks typical for 18th-century optical prints. Wide margins intact with no tears or repairs affecting the image. Framing suggestion: Frame with a simple black or dark wood moulding and an archival off-white or cream mat to emphasize the rich coloring and perspective depth. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve color vibrancy and paper quality. See less
