Pieneman, by b. Taurel : this is a highly detailed 19th-century engraved portrait of king william i of the netherlands (willem frederik, 1772-1843), who reigned as the first king of the netherlands and grand duke of luxembourg from 1815 until his abdication in 1840. The engraving was executed by b. Taurel after an original painting by the renowned dutch historical painter jan willem pieneman (1779-1853). It depicts william i wearing a formal military uniform with prominent metal epaulettes and a high collar, conveying authority and dignity. Pinned to his chest is a large star insignia, likely representing the grand cross of the military order of william, the netherlands' oldest and highest honour, established by the king himself in 1815. King william i is depicted facing slightly to his left, set within an elaborate oval border engraved with precision line work that enhances the realism and prestige of the portrait. The engraving technique is exceptionally fine, characteristic of b. Taurel's skill in rendering depth, fabric textures, and facial expression with clarity and subtlety. Taurel (1794-1858) was one of the prominent engravers of his era, active both in amsterdam and beyond, known for reproducing paintings of dutch royalty and statesmen with exceptional accuracy. This portrait was published circa 1830-1840, during or shortly after william i’s reign, to commemorate his rule and contributions to the consolidation of the kingdom of the netherlands after the napoleonic era. Such engravings were often distributed to governmental offices and prominent citizens as symbols of loyalty and national unity. Condition report: the print is in good condition considering its age. There is mild overall toning and faint spotting in the margins, with edges showing minimal handling wear. The engraved surface remains crisp and clear, with no tears or losses. Framing tips: to enhance its dignified appearance, this engraving would look elegant in a classic gold-leafed or dark wood frame with an archival off-white or cream mat board to preserve its historical character. Avoid overly modern or coloured frames to maintain the engraving’s period authenticity. See less
