This framed print depicts “The Alton Limited”, one of America’s classic passenger trains, rendered by celebrated railroad artist Howard Fogg (1917–1996). Known as “The Dean of American Railroad Artists,” Fogg brought unmatched technical accuracy and dramatic realism to his locomotive paintings.
The scene features a powerful steam engine pulling into a small-town depot, with detailed architecture, rail tracks, and figures adding life and historical authenticity. Below the main print, three inset reproductions of historic railroad stamps further connect the work to the history of American rail travel. A brass plaque with the title “The Alton Limited” is mounted on the frame.
The Alton Limited was the premier passenger train of the Chicago & Alton Railroad, introduced in 1899 and remembered for its luxury and speed. Often called “the most beautiful train in America,” it became iconic in the golden age of U.S. railroads.
