Signed lower left, 'Jules Pages' (American, 1867-1946) and painted circa 1935.
A prominent landscape and marine painter, Jules Eugène Pages spent most of his career in France where he became a celebrated Impressionist painter, while maintaining close ties to his native city of San Francisco. Pages was influential in introducing Impressionism to California.
Born in San Francisco, California Jules Pages was raised in the artistic milieu of his father's engraving business, where he worked as an apprentice. After attending the California School of Design, in 1888 Pages began his education at the Académie Julian with Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant, and Fleury. After returning to San Francisco, he worked as an illustrator for the Examiner and Call newspapers. Upon returning to Paris in 1902, Pages began teaching night classes at the Académie Julian and served as its director. While in France, Pages gained international recognition and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1910. An expatriate Impressionist painter, Pages lived primarily in France until the outbreak of World War II teaching and taking frequent painting trips throughout Europe including to Brittany, Spain and Belgium.
Pages exhibited widely and with success, including at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition; the Paris Salon with honorable mention in 1895 and Gold Medals there in 1899 and 1905. He also exhibited at the Steckel Gallery in Los Angeles in 1909, a solo exhibition at the Bohemian Club in 1924 and in the 1946 memorial exhibition at the California Palace of Legion of Honor. Pages was a member of the International Jury of Awards, the Bohemian Club and the International Society of Sculptors and Painters in Paris.
The artist's works are held in the permanent collections of museums world-wide including the Oakland Museum, the San Diego Museum, the De Young Museum, the San Francisco Bohemian Club, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museums of Pau and Toulouse in France and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris.
