This charming and less common Staffordshire flatback figurine depicts a fox poised against a hollow tree trunk, with textured foliage and a rocky base. The fox is finished in a rich russet red glaze, accented with hand-painted details that highlight its expressive stance. The base shows characteristic age-related craquelure, typical of mid-19th century Staffordshire pottery.
Flatback figures like this were designed for mantel display, their backs left plain for easy placement against a wall. Pieces featuring animals—especially foxes, hounds, and pastoral scenes—were highly popular in Victorian homes.
