Dale Rogers – Brown Leather “Red Chair” Variant (2002)
Carbon Steel & Leather, Signed & Dated
This rare chair embodies Dale Rogers’ gift for transforming industrial materials into living, sculptural forms. Constructed from carbon steel—the type of metal that naturally rusts—Rogers has polished the surface to a lustrous, glowing finish, elevating raw steel into something refined and almost liquid in appearance.
Rather than rigid planes, the frame bows, bends, and arcs with unexpected softness, creating a continuous flow of line and surface. The steel seems to flex like ribbon, giving the piece a quiet sense of movement, as if it’s been coaxed into shape rather than forced. This sculptural quality is balanced by the supple brown leather seat, a grounding element that invites the body into what might otherwise be considered pure sculpture.
Originally documented in Rogers’ book as “Red Chair,” this chair was commissioned and is distinguished by its unique brown leather cushions that according to Dale Rogers makes this a one-of-a-kind piece from a pivotal period in his career—when functional furniture was beginning to evolve into the monumental outdoor sculptures that would cement his reputation. Dale still possesses the original chair in Red fabric.
