Item description:
A wonderful, rare glazed and vitrified ceramic bonbon dish, accompanied by a beautiful circular tray, first made on a potter's wheel and then entirely hand-carved. In addition, both the outer edge of the plate and the bowl have been further decorated with small cords, applied entirely by hand, positioned in a semicircle to create a scalloped edge. Finally, both the lid and the bowl have been embellished with clusters of grapes and leaves and branches of the vine, in relief, also made and applied by hand, to create the two handles and the knob on the lid. Both objects are numbered and signed under the base with a star-shaped mark with a tail, similar to a shooting star, the classic mark of the Nove a Bassano di Antonibon factory. The mark under our objects is, specifically, the mark used in the 19th century. The beautiful patina covering the object is evident and perfectly in line with our dating.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
In the last photos, we have included some pages taken from one of our books in French, which contains some historical information about the Nove factory and many of the marks used, including ours, number 9, used, as written in the notes, in the 19th century. From our internet research, we have found several ceramic objects made by the Antonibon factory in the 19th century, all listed at auction at very high prices, ranging from a minimum of €600-700 for the smaller vases to estimates of €2,500-3,500 for the larger pairs of vases. Unfortunately, we were unable to find white ceramic vases richly hand-carved like ours, as they are very rare, mainly due to their fragility. However, we did find a pair of sculptures depicting two romantic scenes in ceramic, very similar in their white glaze and the type of ceramic used, listed at auction for €2,000-2,500 by Cambi in Genoa, Italy, at the "Antiques and Ancient Paintings" auction on March 15, 2011, lot number 1072, entitled "Two white ceramic groups depicting romantic scenes and cherubs, Nove Bassano 18th century." Bear in mind that a 25-30% commission must always be added to the final result of any auction.
(By entering the details of the items we have indicated into Google, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we have used, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or name of the sales website, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items mentioned).
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
In 1752, Pasquale Antonibon, a descendant of a family of majolica producers, began experimenting with porcelain production with the help of the alchemist Sigmund Fischer of Meissen. In 1762, his efforts were crowned with success and Antonibon obtained a privilege from the Republic of Venice for the porcelain factory at Nove. The style was typically Rococo: the subjects of the figurines were masks from the commedia dell'arte, musicians, and dancers, while the tableware was decorated with landscapes, harbor scenes, and historical episodes. Later, in 1802, Parolin sold the factory to Giovanni Baroni, under whose direction the manufacture made the transition to the neoclassical style. The vases took the form of elongated Greek urns, while the scenes painted on them typically depicted the Napoleonic wars. In 1825, Baroni sold the factory to the Antonibon family, who continued to produce only ceramics. The mark of Le Nove porcelain was a small star in the shape of an asterisk, similar to that of the Doccia Manufactory.
