Made in the style of pottery and tile work that combines the traditional techniques of Ottoman Iznik pottery with Persian Qajar artistic influences.
Iznik pottery, originating from the Ottoman city of Iznik (present-day Turkey), is known for its distinctive style of pottery and tile work. It typically features bold cobalt blue, turquoise, and red colors alongside stylized floral and geometric patterns.
The Qajar dynasty, which ruled Persia (modern-day Iran) from 1785 to 1925, embraced a unique artistic style that blended traditional Persian motifs with European influences. Qajar art often features floral patterns, pastoral landscapes, and depictions of Persian history and literature.
Persian Iznik Qajar style represents a synthesis of these two traditions. While maintaining the vibrant colors and stylized designs of Iznik, it incorporates Qajar artistic elements like floral, human, and animal motifs.
The pottery is typically made from fritware and features a distinctive crackle glaze. It may also be hand-painted with intricate designs.
Fritware, which originated in present-day Iraq and spread throughout the Islamic world, is typically made with a mixture of finely ground quartz (or other siliceous material), a small amount of clay, and a significant amount of frit (ground, pre-fired glass). The frit is added to the clay to lower the firing temperature, making it easier to work with and allowing for a more controlled and vibrant firing process. Fritware became a popular material for pottery. A well-known example of fritware is Iznik pottery, which was produced in the Ottoman Empire.
