Biography - Kim Bongtae (also transcribed as Bong Tae Kim) is a celebrated South Korean-born artist, born in 1937 in Busan. He earned his B.F.A. in Painting from Seoul National University in 1961, then moved to Los Angeles to pursue further studies, completing both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees at Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design) in the late 1960s .
Over the 1960s and early ’70s, Kim gained acclaim for his refined, often monochromatic intaglio prints, produced through his collaborative Triad Workshop in Los Angeles alongside Robin Vaccarino and Jean Burg . As an educator at notable institutions including USC, Otis/Parsons, and West Los Angeles College, he mentored generations of West Coast printmakers and helped foster printmaking ties across the Pacific Rim .
In the early 1980s, Kim returned to South Korea, where he continued teaching at Seoul National University and Sungshin Women’s University. His work spans more than 31 solo exhibitions across Korea, Japan, the U.S., and France, and includes participation in prestigious group shows like the Paris Biennale, Korean Modern Drawing Exhibition in New York, LA’s International Modern Art Exhibition, and the 1988 Olympic Celebrations See less
