This furniture ensemble is an iconic dining room set designed by italian architects and designers afra and tobia scarpa in 1973, consisting of six so-called "monk" chairs and a matching extendable dining table.
the series was designed for the renowned italian manufacturer molteni and is now considered a classic of italian modernism.
the chairs are characterized by a radically reduced yet striking design language. The construction consists of a solid beech frame with a strong rectangular cross-section. The seat and backrest are made of tightly stretched, black saddle leather, which is attached to the sides of the frame with visible screw connections. The characteristic tension in the leather ensures ergonomic seating comfort without the need for additional upholstery.
the "flat" lines and the slightly outward-set legs give the chairs a sculptural effect that nevertheless remains understated and functional. The visible screw connections are not a technical necessity, but rather deliberately designed elements that underscore the industrial character of the design.
the matching table is made of solid wood and was designed to perfectly match the chairs in both form and material. The legs are positioned at the outer corners of the table, which not only creates ample legroom but also supports the clear geometry of the design. The tabletop features a central joint through which the furniture can be extended using a synchronized extension mechanism.
the extension is achieved via two insert leaves located beneath the tabletop. The wood grain is finely textured throughout, made of solid beechwood with a warm-toned varnish.
condition: the condition of the set can be described as very good. The leather surfaces of the chairs show minimal, age-appropriate creases and slight wear to the shine, but no cracks, discoloration, or damage; only minor scratches. The wooden frames of both furniture types are sturdy and visually well-preserved, with only very minor signs of wear, such as small scratches or dents on the lower parts of the legs. The table's extension mechanism appears to be fully functional and complete. Overall, this is a well-maintained, fully functional ensemble with a clearly documented design heritage and high design quality.
