GARDEN OF EDEN SECRETARY-DESK
Pennsylvania, Circa 1770-1780
This magnificent secretary-desk is the reproduction of an antique, circa 1770-1780, from Garden of Eden, a Maryland estate established by land grant in 1788.
Family tradition suggests an origin in southeastern Pennsylvania where Swiss-German cabinetmakers, such as John Bachman II, were noted for their masterful interpretations of the fully developed Philadelphia Chippendale style. The fluted quarter columns, moulded cyma door panels, and broken pediment with carved fretwork and scrolled terminals are indicative of Philadelphia in-fluence. Full credit for the beauty of this piece, however, belongs to the craftsman who scaled, manipulated, and unified these details into a design of supreme elegance.
Reproduction in Solid Appalachian Cherry Cherry Veneer Lid and Door Panels.
This example was purchased new in 1975 by the current owner. The desk is in extremely good condition for its age as shown in the photos, although there are some small signs of wear (see photos). All drawers and cabinets are clean and open smoothly. Complete with the original delivery tags, booklet and 5 original keys (1 of the smaller keys is broken, but there is a working key for each lock and 2 spares). The larger keys open the desk itself and the cabinet, while the smaller key opens the cabinet within the desk (see photos).
Statton compiled its Bicentennial Collection to commemorate the 50th year of the Statton Furniture Manufacturing Company and the 200th year of the United States of Amer-ica. The Collection reproduces in solid cherry wood a selective and distinguished group of antique American furniture which, considering its excellence of design and variety of regional expressions, represents a broad perspective of mid-18th Century cabinet making, an important artistic and social aspect of our nation's colonial heritage.
