Important pair of paintings attributable to the Roman painter Andrea Locatelli (Rome, 1695 - 1741), depicting groups of soldiers resting … Read more Important pair of paintings attributable to the Roman painter Andrea Locatelli (Rome, 1695 - 1741), depicting groups of soldiers resting near a natural bivouac in a mountainous landscape of the Lazio Apennines. These scenes of landscapes with resting soldiers can be traced back to other works by the master and relate in particular to the period between 1725 and 1730, where the Roman landscape painter is directly inspired by Salvador Rosa both in the figures and in the landscape scenario. The paintings we are referring to are six small paintings kept in Munich and cited by Andrea Busiri Vici in the book "Andrea Locatelli e il paesaggio romano del Settecento" - (Ugo Bozzi Editore) and can also be traced back to other Locatelli works of Rosian inspiration distributed in other European museums and private collections. The paintings are of high quality, the figures populating the scene and the natural details of the landscape are reported with particular accuracy, the figures of the soldiers in the foreground are very beautiful, one seated and the other standing leaning on a boulder in a relaxed pose and both engaged a lively conversation with their group of soldiers. Here too we notice balanced composition, diagonal lines of skeletal trunks and branches that intersect against the bright sky, this motif makes the scenes more idyllic and restful. The paintings are in excellent condition, the non-contemporary frames in black lacquer and gold carvings are probably from the late 1800s and early 1900s, as the relining that was carried out on the paintings probably dates back to this era. The canvas measurements are 127 cm x 104 cm; with the frames the measurements are 154 cm x 120 cm. We attach to the sale a historical certificate of guarantee that certifies the era and authenticity.
