Numbered 688 and 689, this print likely originates from a late 18th to early 19th-century German natural history compendium, when fascination with exotic animals was flourishing in Europe. On the left stands the iconic Dodo, depicted here as "Träger Dudu." The Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), native to Mauritius, was already extinct by the late 1600s, making it a symbol of lost biodiversity. Its depiction in 18th-century European prints was largely based on second-hand accounts, taxidermy specimens, and speculative reconstructions, giving it a slightly caricatured but still recognizable form. with its thick, rounded body, stout legs, and curved beak, the Dodo is rendered with simple but expressive detail. To the right, the “Cayennischer Trompeter” or Cayenne Trumpeter refers to a bird from the family Psophiidae, known for its distinctive trumpet-like calls and origin in the tropical forests of South America, notably French Guiana (formerly Cayenne). The long legs, slender neck, and streamlined body contrast beautifully with the stockier Dodo, emphasizing the diversity of bird life presented. The engraving style, likely copperplate, is characteristic of scientific illustrations from the Age of Enlightenment, when European scholars systematically cataloged the natural world. The number "16" in the top right corner suggests this was part of a larger volume or plate series. This print offers both scientific and aesthetic appeal, ideal for collectors of antique natural history, ornithology, or early zoological illustration. Condition report: Good condition.
