This exquisite, hand-painted wireless cloisonné urn / vase in jade green enamel with a transparent glaze features a subtle sunflower design and a silver plate foot and rim. Made by Sato Shippo, Japan, circa 1950s - 1960s, it stands 10” tall and 5.5” wide with a classic shape. SATO hallmark is stamped on bottom. The sunflower symbolizes respect, passionate love and radiance; an unusual design for the time, as native birds and landscapes were usually featured. A rare find and a simply beautiful piece.
Sato cloisonné enamels are first painted on and then fired. This process is repeated a minimum of 3 times for the enamels to fill in the silver wire spaces of the design. Before the final firing, the wire design is removed so that the result is a smooth surface that shows no signs of the mold. This process was first invented during Japan’s “Golden Age” in 1889 by the artist Namikawa Sosuke.
