Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for his sense of and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The Twentieth Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Ar. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.

Richard Diebenkorn ( 1922 - 1993 ) was an American painter who's early work is associated with Abstract Expressionism and The Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950's and 1960's. His later works were instrumental to his achievement of worldwide acclaim. His artworks were influenced by other important Modern artists including Clyfford Still, Willem De Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Henri Matisse. Described as one of the premier American painters of The Postwar Era, Diebenkorn's deeply lyrical Abstractions evoked the shimmering light and wide open spaces of California where he spent most of his entire life.

In this beautiful volume featuring stunning pairings of more than 80 paintings and drawings, the book charts the evolution of Matisse's impact on Diebenkorn over the course of his career. Though they never met, Matisse was an enduring source of inspiration for the California artist, and their works share surprising similarities in subject, composition, palette, and technique.

Essays by Janet Bishop and Katherine Rothkopf explore how this influence evolved over time, connecting the work of the painters, highlighting how Diebenkorn drew from Matisse's example to forge a style entirely of his own.
