An extraordinary example of Meiji-period Japanese cloisonné, dating to the late 19th century (c. 1890–1910), crafted at the height of Japan’s enamel artistry for the export market. Standing 12 inches tall, this vase features a powerful gilded dragon in mid-flight, framed by intricate floral scrollwork and stylized cloud motifs, all executed in a lustrous, multi-colored enamel palette over a deep oxblood-toned ground.
The workmanship is exceptional — each detail is formed with the finest gilt copper wirework, creating perfectly balanced cells that are hand-filled with glass enamel, fired, and polished to a smooth, jewel-like surface. The composition reflects the influence of Nagoya/Owari workshops, renowned during the Meiji era for combining technical mastery with bold, symbolic imagery.
On the base, the vase retains its original Japanese maker’s/exporter’s paper label — a round gold seal with a red border. These labels were applied at the time of manufacture to serve as a workshop mark and proof of authenticity for overseas buyers. Surviving intact labels from this period are rare, adding significant provenance and collector appeal.
