This fine trio of hand-colored lithographs offers a vivid look into the richly layered visual world of Italian fashion in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. These prints, drawn from the highly regarded 1845 costume series, feature a harmonious blend of elegance, drama, and sociopolitical symbolism. Each figure or group depicted reflects a different facet of Italian society, making this set not only an aesthetic treasure but a historical document of class, occupation, and ceremonial role.
Plate No.21, titled "Jeunes Pages" (Young Pages), depicts two young male courtiers in lively conversation. One wears a striking ensemble of pink hose, green-striped trunk hose, and a pumpkin-colored doublet. The other, cloaked in a voluminous gray robe with ornate golden trim, extends a hand as if offering counsel or camaraderie. The scene captures courtly elegance and the sense of companionship often idealized in the artistic depictions of the time.
Plate No.22, "Cavalier Armé" (Armored Horseman), is perhaps the most visually commanding. A knight in full ceremonial armor rides a richly adorned gray horse, poised mid-step. The red cap and intricate gold detailing on both armor and harness evoke the pageantry of Renaissance tournaments and military processions. This figure encapsulates the dual ideals of chivalry and elite status, brought to life with exceptional artistry.
Plate No.23, "Cardinal", presents a robed ecclesiastical figure in striking crimson. The dignified pose and sweeping folds of the cloak give the image solemnity, balanced by a softness of facial expression. His garments, red hat, and layered vestments reflect his high ecclesiastical status while underscoring the deep ties between the Church and the cultural expression of power in 15th-century Italy. These prints are highly desirable for collectors of costume history, Renaissance art enthusiasts, and those decorating in classical or academic themes. Their balance of color, detail, and character makes them a perfect statement series.
Condition: Very good condition overall. The coloring is strong and fresh, with minor age toning around the margins and a few faint foxing spots that do not affect the artwork itself. No tears or folds noted.
