Title: 1855 Grand Cavalcade – Hans von Hallwyl and His Household Banner : This elegant hand-colored lithograph, created by H. Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, is part of the Fest Album celebrating Bern’s entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353. Published in Bern and Zurich in 1855, this large oblong folio captures the grand festival of 1853, which featured elaborate historical reenactments honoring Switzerland’s martial heritage.
The artwork presents a stately procession led by Hans von Hallwyl, a renowned Swiss knight, in full armor. Hallwyl played a significant role in Swiss military history, particularly at the Battle of Sempach in 1386, where Swiss forces decisively defeated the Habsburg army. This victory was a crucial moment in the struggle for Swiss independence. His portrayal here, adorned in the colors of the Holy Roman Empire, reinforces his status as a key figure in medieval Swiss warfare. Von Hallwyl is depicted riding a powerful warhorse draped in an elaborate caparison featuring black eagles on a golden-yellow field. His polished armor gleams under the light, and his plumed helmet adds to his commanding presence. In his right hand, he confidently wields a sword, symbolizing his leadership and combat prowess. To his right, his banner bearer rides a gray steed, holding high the Hallwyl house banner, which features the double-headed eagle on a matching golden background. His attire, including a heraldic tunic with black eagles, emphasizes his allegiance to von Hallwyl’s noble house. The contrast between the golden fabric and the dark symbols highlights the heraldic significance of the composition.
This lithograph embodies the 19th-century Romantic fascination with medieval chivalry and Swiss history. The precise detailing of armor, textiles, and horse tack reflects the technical mastery of lithographic printing during the period. The poised movements of both riders and horses convey a sense of ceremony and military prestige, emphasizing the grandeur of Swiss knights and their historical legacy.
