Published in London by George Bell and Sons as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, this work stands out for its detailed scientific rendering and vibrant Victorian-era artistry. At the top of the print is Polygala chamaebuxus, commonly known as Mountain Milkwort. Native to the alpine and subalpine zones of Central Europe, it is a low-growing evergreen shrub with thick leaves and vividly coloured flowers. The blooms range from creamy white and soft yellow to golden orange and purple at the tips, creating a dynamic and eye-catching contrast that has been carefully captured in this hand-finished illustration. Below it is Teucrium pyrenaicum, or Pyrenean Germander. This compact alpine perennial is found in rocky slopes and high-altitude limestone regions of the Pyrenees. It is characterized by its pale lilac flowers, often marked with darker tones, and its dense clumps of wrinkled, rounded leaves. The artist has portrayed its texture and structure with great precision, giving the plant a three-dimensional presence on the page. Both plants are illustrated using lithography, then coloured by hand with watercolours to enhance depth and realism. The colours remain vivid and fresh, especially the yellows and purples, which contrast beautifully with the rich green foliage. The print is on thick, lightly toned paper with generous margins, showing only minimal signs of age. This piece is a striking example of antique botanical art and would make a refined addition to any collection. It also serves as a unique decorative element in naturalistic or classical interiors, especially when paired with other plates from the same series. Condition summary and framing tips: In good antique condition with clean margins and strong colour. Best framed with a soft ivory or pale olive green mat and a walnut or antique gold frame to highlight the floral tones and historic charm of the piece. See less
