This exquisite antique print highlights the ornamental mastery of Middle Eastern metalwork, with a particular focus on ceremonial arms and armor. Published in 1887 as part of *Der Ornamentenschatz* (The Treasury of Ornament), a groundbreaking design resource compiled by H. Dolmetsch and printed by Julius Hoffmann in Stuttgart, the plate is a rare visual document capturing the sophistication and symbolism of Middle Eastern decorative arts.
The composition centers on a beautifully adorned warrior's helmet and shield, rendered in intricate detail and embellished with gold, silver, and crimson-red accents. The helmet, topped with a finial and surrounded by delicate chainmail, displays finely incised calligraphy and floral scrollwork typical of Safavid and early Qajar aesthetics. The large round shield at the base of the image is equally elaborate, featuring floral medallions, interlaced arabesques, and kufic inscriptions that blend functionality with spiritual and artistic intent. Surrounding the central elements are finely wrought decorative fragments, including blade fittings, border patterns, and pierced metal plaques with vegetal and geometric motifs. Two small panels on the right display figural scenes reminiscent of ancient Middle Eastern storytelling traditions, rendered in a style that suggests a blend of Islamic and pre-Islamic narrative traditions. These ornamental borders would have originally adorned ceremonial swords, architectural panels, or royal furnishings. This lithograph not only records the craftsmanship of Middle Eastern artisans, but also reflects the broader cultural values of beauty, protection, and divinely inspired design. The use of gold and silver tints in the printing process enhances the illusion of metallic surfaces, giving the print a luminous, almost three-dimensional quality.
