The bookcase is made of solid quarter sawn oak often referred to as “tiger oak”. The stamped labels on the inside of the slats date this barrister bookcase as pre 1899. The bookcase has an ogee curved top and base. The three sections that house books are all from the same period but there are differences in the equalizers that help stabilize the doors. One stabilizer is a later style and most likely a replacement. All of the doors appear to have their original glass with the waviness expected of antique glass. From the markings inside this bookcase may have been meant for the export market of the time. As with any preowned furniture the bookcase’s condition is commensurate with use and age. Considering that this bookcase is over 125 years old it is in remarkably good condition for its age. It does have dings, chips, and surfaces scratches as expected and shows signs of an old refinishing. Please look carefully at the pictures as they make up an important part of the description.
