A Pair Of Large 19th century French Ormolu Mounted Obsidian Urns. Attributed to Emmanuel-Alfred Beurdeley.
These urns are primarily crafted from obsidian, a natural volcanic glass, and adorned with detailed ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts. They exhibit elements characteristic of the French Louis XVI and Empire styles, known for their neoclassical influences and opulent decorative arts. The design is often attributed to or inspired by 18th-century French master chaser-gilder Pierre Gouthière. The urns feature elaborate ormolu detailing, including cherubs embracing the urns, a prominent butterfly finial on the lid, and decorative bases and handles. While decorative, similar pieces might have served as cassolettes (for burning incense or perfumes) or were later adapted into lamps.
