This finely executed hand-tinted lithograph titled 'gezigt van den oosterdoksdijk' presents a historical view of the eastern harbor of amsterdam as it appeared in the mid-19th century. Published in 1857 by j.c. Loman jr. In amsterdam, the lithograph was drawn by p.w.m. Trap and appeared in the illustrated volume *ons vaderland en zijne bewoners; beschrijving van de steden, dorpen, waardoor zich in sommige streken de bewoners onderscheiden*, authored by a.j. Van der aa. The image captures a tranquil scene along the oosterdoksdijk, a location near the city’s expanding port district. A variety of urban features are depicted, including canal houses, sailing vessels, and small boats dotting the calm waters. The montelbaanstoren, with its distinctive tower, rises in the background, anchoring the composition and lending an identifiable amsterdam landmark to the view. The domed structure seen to the right adds architectural interest and frames the perspective, while the bridge in the center brings movement and human scale to the scene. W.l. Andriæe is noted as the lithographer, and the lithography was printed by the firm of p.w.m. Trap, both known for their technical skill and fine tonal transitions. The subtle use of color adds warmth and depth to the otherwise monochromatic palette, enhancing the charm of the urban scenery without overpowering the original drawing’s detail. This lithograph is a valuable example of 19th-century dutch topographical illustration, offering insights into the cityscape before large-scale modern development. It’s particularly appealing to collectors of historical amsterdam views and prints from the dutch romantic period.
condition report: very good condition. Light age-related foxing and toning mainly in the margins. Image area clean and colors well-preserved. Blank verso. Margins are full and edges are sound.
