At the center, a seated woman rests on a sack and leans on a woven basket while a small child kneels beside her, holding her hand with a gentle expression. Opposite them, a barefoot young woman stands with a large basket propped upright beside her, gazing thoughtfully at an object in her hands — possibly food or a coin. The relaxed posture, quiet gestures, and warm engagement among the figures suggest a moment of rest or interaction during daily labor. The composition, draftsmanship, and subject matter are all consistent with the early work of Gerardus Johannes Verburgh (1775–1864), a Dutch artist celebrated for his genre drawings and scenes of women and children in rural dress. The piece is executed entirely in black chalk or graphite, and signed faintly at lower right. Of particular interest is the sketched hand in the background, suggesting this work may have been developed from life studies or intended as a compositional exploration. The presence of baskets and humble clothing places the scene firmly in the realm of peasant or working-class life, a favored theme in Northern European art around 1800. The stylistic consistency with Verburgh’s authenticated works makes this a strong attribution. The calm balance of the composition and naturalistic human interactions make it highly appealing both as a drawing and as a historical document of early 19th-century life. Condition report: Good condition for its age. Light creasing and a few scattered foxing spots are visible throughout, mostly in the margins. Edges show minor handling wear and a tiny tear at lower right. No restoration. Drawing surface is stable and well-preserved. Framing tips: A simple black or medium walnut frame with a soft white or pale grey mat will highlight the graphite detail without overwhelming the quiet tones. Consider float mounting to preserve the full sheet and show its historical paper edges. Technique: Black chalk or graphite drawing on laid paper Maker: Attributed to Gerardus Johannes Verburgh, The Netherlands, dated 1798 See less
