The sheet presents two separate images: The upper engraving is titled “Het Gouvernement te Batavia.” It shows the Dutch Government House with its formal canal bridge in the foreground. Figures in European dress walk along the bridge and quayside, while VOC officials and locals conduct business near the prominent administrative buildings and church towers visible in the background, conveying Batavia’s status as the VOC’s Asian headquarters. The lower engraving is titled “De Markt te Batavia.” It depicts a busy market scene under large leafy trees, with a diverse gathering of traders and buyers. Local Javanese, Chinese, and Dutch residents are shown trading goods, socialising, and transporting wares. Stalls and thatched buildings line the market square, reflecting the vibrant multicultural character of Batavia’s economy during the colonial period. Both engravings capture the architecture, urban planning, and daily life of 18th-century Batavia. They were published circa 1780 as part of an illustrated travel or historical work documenting Dutch colonial settlements in Asia. The engraver’s precise linework emphasises architectural features and human activity, offering valuable insights into VOC cityscapes and trading culture. Condition: Very good condition. Strong clean impressions with fine detail. Light overall age toning, minimal foxing spots mainly in margins, and faint creases from handling. Wide margins preserved. No tears or repairs noted. Fully suitable for framing. Framing tips: These twin Batavia views will display beautifully in a single mat window with a slim dark wood or black frame to emphasise the engraving detail. Use UV-protective glazing to preserve paper clarity and prevent fading over time. See less
