Untitled (Head of Timothy Leary) (2005)
11-color lithograph with woodblock elements on Rives Cover white paper
This 2005 print by contemporary American artist Dana Schutz reimagines a pivotal scene from the 1996 documentary Timothy Leary's Dead, in which the radical psychologist's severed head was cryogenically preserved. Schutz transforms this macabre moment into a darkly comic meditation on legacy and spectacle, rendering Leary's disembodied head as both scientific specimen and artistic subject.
Technical Details:
- Medium: Complex 11-color lithograph incorporating woodblock printing
- Support: Heavyweight Rives Cover paper (white)
- Dimensions: 33.1 × 31 inches (84 × 78.7 cm)

Conceptual Framework:
Schutz's characteristic painterly approach translates powerfully to printmaking in this work, where her exaggerated, almost cartoonish rendering:
- References the cult-like celebrity surrounding Leary
- Engages art historical traditions of portraiture and vanitas
Provenance & Exhibition History:
This impression bears the artist's pencil signature, date, and edition number along the lower margin. Acquired from Rago Auctions, previous owners acquired directly from the publisher.
