It is a striking representation of the gothic aesthetic, characterized by intricate foliage, mythical birds, and heraldic-style arrangements. The central design features a crowned angelic figure framed by swirling acanthus leaves, while the surrounding borders are richly adorned with stylized thistles, fleur-de-lis, poppy pods, cinquefoils, and other fantastical vegetation. Brightly colored birds and whimsical insects peek out among the scrolls, enhancing the liveliness and storytelling nature of the pattern. These motifs were originally used in manuscript illumination, architectural decoration, and textile borders between the 12th and 15th centuries. Their revival in the 19th century was part of a broader fascination with gothic art, championed by designers and architects who sought to reintegrate historical beauty into modern design. Lithographed by durin and printed by firmin-didot et cie, paris, this plate is part of the important design reference series edited by albert racinet. The detailed linework and vivid chromolithographic coloring demonstrate the technical excellence and artistic reverence of the period. A splendid piece for collectors of medieval design, art historians, or anyone interested in botanical ornamentation. Condition: excellent. Slight age toning at the edges, image very clean and colors vibrant. No tears or creases. Framing tips: ideal in a gold-leaf or deep burgundy frame with a cream or parchment-toned mat to echo the manuscript inspiration. A narrow inner gold filet would draw the eye to the intricate central design. Technique: chromolithograph maker: firmin-didot, paris, after albert racinet, c.1869 See less
