The inscription identifies him as the official city historian of Amsterdam (“Historieschryver der Stad Amsterdam”), born there on October 21, 1709. The portrait was engraved by Jacobus Houbraken and dated 1766. Wagenaar sits in a three-quarter pose at a writing desk, surrounded by books and a quill, reinforcing his scholarly identity. His powdered wig, formal coat, and direct gaze are characteristic of 18th-century Enlightenment portraiture. The engraved poem below, written by Jan de Kruyff, praises Wagenaar’s dedication to truth, justice, and civic duty. It celebrates his intellectual rigor and patriotism—qualities that earned him widespread respect in his lifetime. This print was published by the Amsterdam firm of Immerzeel & Tibout, and engraved *naar het leven* (from life), based on a portrait painted by Studio A. Zygers in 1766, a posthumous rendering meant to memorialize Wagenaar’s contributions to Dutch national identity and the city of Amsterdam. As the author of over 20 volumes of Dutch history, Wagenaar’s influence extended far beyond his time. His work was central to shaping the 18th-century view of the Dutch Republic’s past. This portrait not only honors a key Enlightenment figure but also embodies the Dutch civic values of learning, record-keeping, and public service. Collectors of Dutch history, Enlightenment figures, or Amsterdam’s intellectual heritage will find this a meaningful and finely executed portrait. Condition: Crisp and clean impression on laid paper. Light age-toning and one faint crease in the lower right margin. Wide margins intact, no tears or repairs. Framing tips: A black or walnut frame with a warm cream or parchment-toned mat will complement the engraving’s historical elegance and highlight the fine linework.
