This elegant chromolithograph, Plate XC from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, features a refined example of 18th-century French ceiling decoration executed in the neoclassical style. It captures the light symmetry, classical allusions, and delicate linearity that defined the interiors of the Louis XVI period, especially those found in aristocratic residences and government buildings. The design centers on a formal ceiling layout composed of medallions, rosettes, and framed oval cartouches. At the top and bottom are mythological scenes rendered in soft terracotta and celadon tones, likely depicting classical figures such as Cupid or Bacchus. These fresco-style images are surrounded by scrolling acanthus, floral tendrils, festoons, and a repeated garland motif. The entire composition is enclosed by a border of geometrical precision and ornamental harmony. Smaller decorative details include winged sphinxes, griffins, urns, birds, laurel crowns, and vine scrolls—classic elements of grotesque ornament rooted in Roman antiquity. A large radial rosette with fan-like symmetry anchors the upper right quadrant, likely representing the center of a domed or vaulted ceiling.
Lithographed by Dufour & Prélon and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris circa 1869, this plate formed part of Auguste Racinet’s seminal work *L'Ornement Polychrome*. Racinet’s volumes became a cornerstone of 19th-century decorative arts education, encouraging historicist revival and stylistic refinement throughout Europe. This print is a fine example of Enlightenment-era French decoration, ideal for use in scholarly study, interior design inspiration, or classical restoration projects.
