Plate XIV from L'Ornement Polychrome, it showcases symbolic motifs and floral arrangements with precise composition and subtle color harmonies, reflecting the deep cultural and spiritual meaning embedded in Chinese decorative design. The upper section features a bright green background densely populated with auspicious symbols. Among them are scrolls, incense burners, vases, and traditional objects associated with scholarly refinement and good fortune, interwoven with blooming peonies, cherry blossoms, and lotuses. The combination of flora and revered scholarly items evokes themes of prosperity, education, peace, and the harmonious flow of qi (life energy). Each motif appears as if floating across a continuous silk ground, reminiscent of brocade textiles or painted screens. The lower half of the print shifts to a golden-brown background and focuses on symmetrical, stylized floral forms. Peonies, chrysanthemums, and lotus blossoms bloom amid curling ribbons and "endless knot" motifs, all rendered in brilliant pastel shades—pink, blue, yellow, and green. These forms reflect traditional embroidery patterns used in imperial robes and temple decorations, symbolizing beauty, harmony, longevity, and divine connection. Lithographed by Durin and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris circa 1869, the plate was produced as part of the influential design compendium by Albert-Charles-Auguste Racinet. The chromolithographic process allowed for finely layered colors that closely imitate the intricate shading and detail found in silk embroidery, lacquerware, and hand-painted porcelain. This print is not only a valuable visual reference but also a testament to 19th-century Europe's appreciation for Chinese aesthetics. It played a key role in the spread of Chinoiserie and Eastern-inspired design in the West, particularly in the decorative arts and interiors of the late Victorian and Art Nouveau periods. Condition: Excellent overall condition. Bright, unfaded colors on thick paper. Very light age-toning and faint foxing in the outer margin. No tears, creases, or repairs. Framing tips: A light gold, rosewood, or lacquered black frame would complement the print beautifully. Use a cream, soft green, or light tan mat to enhance the delicate hues and symmetry of the floral composition. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Firmin-Didot, Paris, after A.
