Pair of 1940s jindřich halabala h-227 bentwood armchairs with original upholstery this distinguished pair of h-227 bentwood armchairs was designed in the 1940s by jindřich halabala, one of the leading figures of czech modernist design. Manufactured by up závody in czechoslovakia, these chairs exemplify halabala’s unique approach to ergonomics, craftsmanship, and sculptural form. The h-227 model is notable for its dramatic, curved armrests, created using steam-bent beechwood—a hallmark of halabala’s work. The arms loop in a striking symmetrical arc, offering both visual dynamism and exceptional comfort. The dark-stained wood has developed a beautifully aged patina, enhancing the warmth and character of the chairs. Retaining their original 1940s upholstery, the chairs are covered in a rich red jacquard fabric with a subtle repeating geometric pattern, finished with gold-toned piping. This rare, untouched fabric speaks to the authenticity and integrity of the pair. While the upholstery is intact and displays well, reupholstery is recommended for daily use or customization. The chairs are structurally solid and display minor signs of age, consistent with careful vintage use. Their compact, upright form makes them ideal for city apartments, reading corners, or refined hotel lobbies. Jindřich halabala’s furniture was instrumental in introducing functionalist design to a broader public, merging high style with mass production techniques. The h-227 is less frequently seen than the iconic h-269, making this pair a rarer find and a perfect choice for collectors or interior designers seeking authentic mid-century czech pieces.
