Publishers, new York. printed and bound on August 30, 1971 in France on the presses of Draeger Freres. The large volume features a monograph survey collection of the artworks of the artist Georges Braque.
Georges Braque ( 1882 - 1963 ) was a major 20th Century French painter, collagist, printmaker, and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were his alliance with Fauvism, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Closely associated with his colleague Pablo Picasso, their respective Cubist works were indistinguishable for many years. Working closely together, thus the invention of The Cubist Style was a joint effort between Braque and Picasso. Artworks by Braque are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This gorgeous volume pays tribute to the genius of Georges Braque. The whole astonishing range of his oeuvre is represented from the early Fauvist masterpieces, through the daring experiments which he and Picasso launched the Cubist revolution in Modern Art, to the classically inspired canvases of the 1920's and the lyrical Abstractions in his later years.
Pierre Descargues, distinguished art historian, traces the course of Braque's life and stylistic development in an interesting and compelling biographical outline. The rich artistic milieu of Paris in the Early Twentieth Century is brilliantly evoked as he describes Braque's friendships with other Modern Master artists of his time. Additionally Francis Ponge, the celebrated Avant-Garde poet, a lifelong friend of Braque, has contributed a memoir of the artist that is a superb literary creation in its own right.
