Designed in the 1950´s, this decanter is part of Timo Sarpaneva´s innovative i-collection. This collection included objects that could be seen as being on the border between a utilitarian object and an art object. (Adapted from Iittala's website.)
Timo Sarpaneva Finnish, b. 1926
Decanter, Circa 1955
i-collection
Made by Iittala, Finland
Dark blue glass
Signed engraved "T. Sarpaneva - 2518"
Height: 9 1/2 in. (24 cm) Width: 4 3/4 in. (12 cm)
The work has some minor production flaws and also surface scratches from use. There are some noticeable surface scratches below the neck at its shoulder on the top surface area, which reduces the quality of the decanter. However, for a period example of this design, it is in reasonable condition in this price range. There also appear to be some water spots on the interior that can be cleaned. (See photographs.)
There is distracting reflection within the space where they were photographed, making visibility a bit challenging. Color fluctuations in the photographs, including reflected light and color cause the appearance of color variations, but the object is one consistent blue. I am glad to provide additional photographs.
An "Iittala" adhesive label remains at the edge of the neck but can easily be removed if desired.
In short, the work has wear and production irregularities while presenting an overall pleasing period design aesthetic to enjoy.
