*Bhumisparsa Mudra: More commonly known as the 'earth witness' mudra. Literally, Bhumisparsha translates into ‘touching the earth’. The left-hand rests palm upward in the lap: the right hand, hanging over the knee, palm inward, points to the earth. The mudra portrays the Buddha taking the earth as witness to his right to the bodhi, witnessing the fact that he has fulfilled the complete discipline of a Bodhisattva. His transformation from a Bodhisattva to the Buddha recalls the superiority of the knowledge of the Buddha, and the means that enables the Enlightened One to triumph over the demons. See less
