Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, is part of the 'Fest Album' commemorating Bern’s entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353. Published in Bern and Zurich in 1855, this large oblong folio celebrates the grand historical reenactments of 1853, marking Bern’s rich military and political heritage. The artwork depicts a stately equestrian procession featuring Adrian von Bubenberg, the famed 15th-century Bernese knight and military leader, riding in full armor and ceremonial dress. He is accompanied by his Hausbanner (household banner), carried by a noble retainer. Bubenberg played a crucial role in defending Swiss independence, most notably at the Battle of Murten (1476), where his leadership helped secure a decisive victory against Charles the Bold of Burgundy. His steadfast defense of Bernese and Swiss interests made him one of the most revered figures in Swiss history. The central figure, Adrian von Bubenberg, is clad in an elegant blue surcoat adorned with his coat of arms, a symbol of his noble lineage. His full suit of armor, including a plumed helmet and gauntlets, reflects his status as a knight and commander. His horse, richly caparisoned with red and gold trappings, marches forward in a poised and dignified manner, emphasizing the ceremonial grandeur of the scene. To his right, his banner bearer rides alongside him, dressed in a matching blue and white ensemble. The banner, fluttering in the wind, carries the insignia of Bubenberg’s house, signifying loyalty and honor. His upright posture and steady grip on the flagpole convey the disciplined bearing expected in medieval pageantry. Both figures and their horses exude a sense of elegance and authority, capturing the essence of chivalry and nobility. This lithograph exemplifies the 19th-century Romantic fascination with medieval history, particularly the heroic narratives of Swiss independence. The attention to detail in the riders’ garments, armor, and horse tack highlights the skill of the lithographer in capturing historical authenticity. The composition’s balance and movement create a dynamic yet stately representation of Swiss heritage. Condition Summary: The lithograph remains in excellent condition, with vibrant hand coloring that enhances the richness of the historical scene. Minor signs of age, including light foxing in the margins, are present but do not detract from the overall aesthetic quality. The paper has retained its strength and clarity, making this an exceptional collectible. Framing Tips: To best display this print, use a high-quality frame with UV-protected museum glass or acrylic to preserve its colors. A wide mat border in neutral or cool tones will complement the blue and gold hues while maintaining a classic presentation. A dark wooden or gold-accented frame will enhance the regal and historical theme of the artwork. Archival mounting materials should be used for long-term preservation and protection. See less
