Originally published in 'de zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst', this illustration showcases the physical differences between these two spotted felines with remarkable attention to detail and scientific accuracy. The serval (leptailurus serval) is a medium-sized african wild cat known for its long legs, large ears, and striking coat covered in bold black spots. Native to the grasslands and wetlands of sub-saharan africa, servals are expert hunters, using their powerful leaps and acute hearing to catch prey. Unlike other wild cats, they have an unusually high hunting success rate. The gentle cat in this illustration could correspond to an early representation of a wild feline such as the african golden cat (caracal aurata) or an oversized wildcat species. European naturalists in the 19th century often classified exotic species under broad names before modern taxonomy refined their classifications. Created by c.c. G. Zool. And printed by la haye & j. L. G. V., this lithograph is a valuable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints, wildlife enthusiasts, and those interested in early artistic representations of exotic felines. Keywords: 19th century, lithograph, natural history, zoology, serval, african wild cats, spotted cats, leptailurus serval, big cats, scientific illustration, antique print, animal engraving, wildlife art, taxonomy, netherlands, la haye, j.l.g.v. --- condition summary : the print is in good condition, with minor age-related toning and some foxing visible, mostly along the margins. The lithographic details remain crisp, showcasing the serval’s distinctive leggy frame and the gentle cat’s well-defined coat patterns. The edges have slight irregularities due to historical binding, but no major tears or folds are present. The print is well-preserved and remains highly collectible. --- framing tips: for an elegant display, use an acid-free mat in a neutral tone, such as off-white or light beige, to enhance the lithograph’s fine details. A dark wooden or black frame will create a bold contrast, drawing attention to the intricate shading. Uv-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed alongside other wildlife lithographs, matching frames will create a refined and cohesive collection. See less
