Santa Cruz artist Ed Penniman’s paintings convey his deep appreciation for life and the natural beauty of the region, shaped by his experiences of overcoming adversity.

Bio:
Ed Penniman is widely recognized as one of California’s most distinguished living landscape painters. Celebrated for his mastery of the plein air tradition, Penniman brings a contemporary sensibility and spiritual depth to his work that continues to captivate collectors and peers alike.

A Santa Cruz native and revered local icon, Penniman designed the official county flag and was mentored by his grandmother, Lenora Penniman, an internationally exhibited landscape painter active in the 1920s and '30s.

He studied at the California Institute of the Arts/formerly Chouinard Art Institute, and began his professional career at Ogilvy & Mather, creating commercial design work for prominent corporate clients. Among his many honors, he was awarded the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Penniman has exhibited in major museums, earned significant market recognition, and held leadership roles in influential arts organizations. His lifelong dedication to plein air painting—distinguished by a signature palette of soft, tranquil tones—has taken him on international artistic expeditions and secured his place as a torchbearer of California’s storied landscape tradition.
