this very artwork refers to inferno, chant 22, verses 25-28:

e come a l'orlo de l'acqua d'un fosso
stanno i ranocchi pur col muso fuori,
sì che celano i piedi e l'altro grosso,
sì stavan d'ogne parte i peccatori;

e’en as the frogs, that of a wat’ry moat
stand at the brink, with the jaws only out,
their feet and of the trunk all else concealed,
thus on each part the sinners stood\.
